Scholarship Description: The School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University has an ambitious development strategy which allows us to offer an exciting opportunity for a PhD Studentship. The studentships will pay UK/EU fees and provide a maintenance stipend linked to the RCUK rate (£13,590 per annum for 2011/12) for up to three years. Real estate is a major asset class nationally and internationally and it has a major impact on the macroeconomy, having a significant role in the recent recession. Research in real estate economics and investment has advanced significantly over the last decade as longer time series databases have become available. In addition, there has been a significant growth in the scale of international real estate investment consequent upon the globalisation of production processes and financial deregulation (Tiwari and White, 2010). There is also strengthened interconnection between real estate markets, the financial sector and national economies that impact on the amplitude of fluctuation of economic cycles. These factors also raise the importance of obtaining good quality data upon which to build economic models that can show the operation of real estate markets across countries.

In this PhD study, the student would examine real estate market models that link occupation, investment and development sectors, considering how to effectively model the investment sector that has historically often been treated as exogenous to such models. As part of this, market adjustment processes in occupation and investment markets would be explicitly considered and different models of adjustment would be estimated. The empirical model estimated would be able to show the interaction between the real estate market and the macroeconomy and would also link to the theoretical issues of market adjustment towards trend growth paths. Econometric theory supporting model construction and inference would also be investigated to ensure model validity. Having constructed the market model, the study would then proceed to consider how this model could be applied to examine real estate markets internationally, nationally, and regionally. It would examine additional factors that have differing levels of importance at different spatial scales and the drivers of investment across national boundaries. Issues of market efficiency, liquidity, market size, and the wider capital market would be considered (see Dunse et al, 2007 and 2010). Real estate investment decision making would then be evaluated in light of the evidence from market models applied at different scales of analysis. The models would also be used as a basis for identification of the importance of key factors and to simulate and forecast market performance.

Erasmus Mundus Master's Scholarship

The Erasmus Mundus master's programme in Systems Biology (euSYSBIO) is a two-year Master's programme including compulsory mobilty for the students. This programe is cooperation between KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (KTH), Instituto Superior Tecnologico in Portugal (IST) and Aalto University school of Science and Technology in Finland.

The euSYSBIO programme offers education of high international standard as well as cultural experience from two different European countries and a double degree from two universities.

Candidates who apply for an Erasmus Mundus Master Programme are at the same time considered for a scholarship nomination for this specific programme. The scholarships are awarded to the highest ranked candidates that fulfill the following scholarship conditions.

Category A

Development of a health and welfare monitor for pigs based on image and sound analysis

Project description and tasks
Measuring of animal-based parameters can substantially contribute to health and welfare objectives that have been set by EU-legislation. Currently welfare is assessed by on-farm auditing, once or twice a year. However, this is time consuming and the question also arises whether the auditor is measuring animals under normal farm conditions. Compared to the current situation, automated recording of animal-based parameters has a number of advantages. Recordings can be made real-time and information can be send to a central database, reducing the need to send specialized personnel out to farms. Furthermore, behaviour parameters such as location, activity and sound of the animals can be measured more objectively and consequently these measurements can be used in a real time detection of behaviour patterns.

This project aims the development of a health and welfare monitor for pigs based on automatic detection of visual-auditive welfare related behaviour parameters. Vision and sound algorithms shall be used and further developed to calculate a limited number of characteristic parameters, such as animal position and movement, as well as sound intensity, duration and location. The dynamic variation of these parameters shall be related to specific behaviours, such as eating, drinking, resting. locomotion, social behaviour and sickness. Automatic detection data shall be validated using physiological indicators of health and welfare..

The research will be conducted in close collaboration with the Universiteit Gent.

Candidate profile
The candidate must have a master’s or equivalent degree in (bio, agricultural-) engineering (electrical, computer, civil, etc.), physics, mathematics or other relevant field.

The candidate should be willing to obtain a PhD degree in the field of bio-engineering. Reporting the project results in international peer reviewed journals is a major task.

The candidate must be able to speak and write English.

Working knowledge of MATLAB, experiences in image processing and/or mathematical modelling is requested.

Student and employee status
The assistant will be working within the Centre for Research and Economic Analysis (CREA), the research unit of the Economics Department. The assistant is expected to contribute to research projects in the area of macroeconomics, under the supervision of Prof. H. Sneessens.
Tasks

Write a PhD thesis in the field of macro-economics and contribute in this way to the research output of the CREA. The thesis has to be done at the University of Luxembourg but can be part of a joint supervision with another university.
Contribute to the teaching at the rate of one or three hours per week of small group teaching and tutorials.
Profile

Master’s degree in Economics (no later than September 2010).
Have the linguistic skills to evolve in a multilingual environment: fluency in either English or French, good understanding of the second language and possibly a third language, German in particular, will be considered an advantage.
